Fine Wine > Still > Syrah/Shiraz > 95-99 Pts > France

The wine grape of the Northern Rhone of Cote Rotie and Hermitage. Known as Shiraz in Australia, it is spicy and intense, combining berry flavors with a light peppery aftertaste. Excellent Syrah also made in California and Washington State. When combined with Grenache and Mourvedre, also typical Rhone grapes, the results are fruity and characterful and delicious when drunk young. Charcoal-grilled steaks and spicy meats pair beautifully with Syrah.

Domaine Courbis Champelrose Cornas 2009 750ml
|   WA: 93-95   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"A prodigious Cornas possessing all the pepper, smoked game, blackberry, cassis, burning ember and scorched earth characteristics one could desire. This rich, full-bodied 2009 should be a singular Cornas to drink over the next 15+ years."

Yann Chave Hermitage Rhone 2010 750ml
|   WA: 95   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"The 2010 Hermitage is clearly the biggest, richest and most ageworthy wine of this trio. It boasts a dense purple color along with notes of creme de cassis, smoked herbs, licorice and graphite. Full-bodied with outstanding depth, purity, power and overall equilibrium as well as beautifully pure..

Delas Freres Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette Rhone 2009 Rhone 750ml
|   WA: 95-97   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"One of the top wines in this portfolio is the 2009 Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette. Aged in 50% new oak, it exhibits abundant aromas of creme de cassis as well as hints of acacia flowers, crushed rocks and graphite along with massive concentration, full body, a dense style, a boatload of tannin..

Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie Cote Blonde 2011 750ml
|   WA: 95   |    IWC: 94   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"As in 2012, the 2011 Cote Rotie Cote Blonde has the most depth and class. More reserved than the La Landonne currently, it yields notions of raspberry, crushed flowers, licorice and spice to go with a full-bodied, backward and beautifully concentrated profile on the palate. Perfectly balanced,..

M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon Rhone 2011 750ml
|   WA: 97-100   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
Flirting with perfection, the 2011 Ermitage Le Pavillon is the most remarkable of these four cuvees. Intense blackberry liqueur notes intermixed with notions of creme de cassis, charcoal, licorice and black truffles are followed by a monumentally sized wine with colossal concentration. It is..

Cote Rotie la Mouline 2007 Guigal 750ml
|   WA: 95-97   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Cote Rotie La Mouline will be bottled around the time this report is released. A superb effort made in the style of the 1991 (which is drinking beautifully at age 20), the 2007 displays silky, velvety tannins, a seamless integration of acidity, alcohol and tannin,..

Delas Freres Hermitage Les Bessards Rhone 2011 1.5L
|   WA: 96-100   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
Between 900 and 1,000 cases are normally made of the luxury cuvee, the Hermitage Les Bessards. An astonishing wine for the vintage, the 2011 is a candidate for the wine of the year in the entire Rhone Valley. Its black/purple color is accompanied by copious aromas of pen ink, licorice,..

Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 1990 750ml
|   WA: 100   |    WS: 97   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"The 1990 La Chapelle is the sexy and opulent. I had the 1990 at the Jaboulet tasting, and again out of a double magnum three months ago. On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a three-digit score. The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all the attention it has..
