Grenache is one of the most versatile among red wine grapes. Blended with Syrah, Carignan and Mourvedre it creates Cote du Rhone reds Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Cote du Rhone and Cote du Rhone-Villages. It has found even greater use in Spain (where it is the most widely planted red varietal): it's blended with Tempranillo to make Rioja. California and Australia also have large plantings of it. On its own, Grenache is a fruity red wine, best drunk young, with ample but not aggressive tannins and nose and palate of black cherry, black currants and blackberries. Its uncomplicated appeal makes it a prime ingredient in roses and rosados.
