The Gruner Veltliner is the grape most associated with Austria. It accounts for over two thirds of the country's vineyard plantings. Nearly unknown in the US until a decade or so ago, it has become the darling varietal of wine lovers seeking a new taste profile -- citrus aromas, white peach and pepper. The vast amount of Gruner Veltliner is made for local consumption in Austria and has little personality. The better wines come from three districts along the Danube: the Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal. The best wines from these areas can be complex and even develop depth and nuance as they age.
