Fine Wine > Red > Fortified > Spain

In the past 15 years no European wine-making country has undergone such a leap forward in the variety and quality of its wines as Spain. Barely 20 years ago it was a challenge to find Spanish wines in the US from beyond Rioja; today Spanish wines from over a half dozen regions are available. Today, wine names like Mencia, Penedes, Riberera del Duero, Yecla and more are becoming much better known and appreciated. It's also heartening that this wine renaissance is being achieved largely with native Spanish grape varieties. Among the big changes are improved techniques in vine cultivation and vinification, allowing these formerly lesser known regions bring their wines to a grateful and appreciative international audience.

Gonzalez Byass Vina AB Amontillado Sherry NV 750ml

Cellar/Tasting Notes
This is a very good amontillado for under $18. It has a clear, deep gold appearance with a clean, pronounced nose of almonds, lemon zest, cedar, and cured maple. Gonzalez Byass Alfonso Oloroso Seco Sherry NV 750ml
|   WE: 89   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"... The palate is racy due to no shortage of acidity, and the flavor profile is led by a salty, briney almond and leather character. Sheer and serious, with not a sugar cube in sight."

Gonzalez Byass Solera 1847 Oloroso Dulce Sherry NV 750ml
|   WE: 91   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"Another impressive Oloroso from Gonzalez Byass. This is a sweet, dark, brooding Sherry with prune and other sweet fruit aromas. The palate is rich but has good flow, while dark flavors of dulce de leche and burnt brown sugar are wonderful. Sweet but balanced by mild coffee-like bitterness on the..

Lustau East India Solera Sweet Sherry NV 750ml
|   WA: 96   |

Cellar/Tasting Notes
"The dark amber-hued non-vintage East India Solera is essentially an old Oloroso blended with an old Pedro Ximenez, which gives it a sweet character. It offers more mature notes of maple syrup, brown sugar, spice box, raisin and chocolate beer nuts, and its terrific balancing acidity cuts through..
